Lewisham Loop - Issue 33 ✨

This weekend takes us from country music on Lewisham High Street to ESEA Heritage Month celebrations, a Vietnamese Mid-Autumn Festival and some properly loud New Cross gigs. You may need to make a few choices on Saturday. Sorry about that.

Life’s a Rodeo brings a live country show to the Fox & Firkin, performing songs made famous by Dolly Parton, Shania Twain, Luke Combs and more. A good excuse to gather your country-loving friends without organising a trip beyond SE13.

Block Power Music celebrates its second anniversary with producers going back to back on live-sequenced tracks. Special guest Maxwell Owin joins the crew for a night that should suit anyone who likes seeing how the music comes together, as well as hearing the result.

The library’s free, family-friendly celebration rounds off East and South East Asian Heritage Month with dragon dancing, tai chi and cultural activities led by EasyStepsUK. An easy Saturday morning plan if you want the children out of the house and doing something cultural.

Slightly outside of Lewisham in neighbouring Greenwich, this volunteer-run non-profit anime convention fills Greenwich Borough Hall with independent artists, manga, workshops, live music and a cosplay competition. Cosplay/ dress up is encouraged but not mandatory.

The full schedule of the convention can be found here with details on what acts and stalls will be present, as well as directions. Tickets are £7.50 for adults or £5 for under 18s and give entry for the full duration.

JIUN Collective hosts short films by East and Southeast Asian artists, followed by a veggie potluck. The films explore migration, family and identity; rice and tea are provided, and you’re welcome to join for all or part of the afternoon.

American hard-rock band Spread Eagle heads to New Cross Inn for a close-up gig with plenty of volume. If your ideal evening involves guitars and a small live room, this is your pick.

Bromley Concert Band brings animal-themed music from film, television and the classical repertoire to St Andrew’s Church. There are interval refreshments and a retiring collection, making this a gentler Saturday evening option.

Vietnamese Family Partnership returns to Deptford Lounge with lion dancing, bamboo dance, performances, food and children’s activities.

It’s free, open to all ages and drop-in, though entry may be first come, first served if it gets busy. Full details on what performances and activities to expect can be found here!

The Silhouettes Project brings its collaborative mix of hip-hop and jazz to the Fox & Firkin garden. There’ll also be street food, market stalls and activities for little ones!

Ital Power Sound System takes over the Amersham Arms for an evening of roots and dub culture. Doors run from 5pm, with last entry at 9pm.

💌 Chinese Paper Cutting - Friday 25 September, 11-12am, Manor House Library. Chinese paper cutting workshop led by Carry Hornby, dabbling in a centuries-old art form. All materials provided.

🎮 Esports Youth Club - Friday 25 September, 4.30pm, Downham Library. Games and tournaments for ages 11–18; useful if Friday after school needs a plan.

💪 Power Wave - Saturday 26 September, 9–9.30am, Corbett Community Library. A short, friendly strength session for anyone who finds a gym daunting. £9 for a single class.

🎨 Craft Club - Saturday 26 September, 2pm, Deptford Lounge. A different arts-and-crafts theme each week for children aged five and over. Glue-stick energy welcome.

💿 Bring Your Own Vinyl - Saturday 26 September, 2–4pm, Catford Library. Bring a favourite record and spend an afternoon discovering what everyone else has brought. An adult event.
