Lewisham Loop - Issue 31 ✨

This weekend has plenty of variety. There’s late-night house in Lewisham, wildlife and art beside Deptford Creek, family raving, metal in New Cross, comedy in Brockley and enough hands-on workshops to make staying home feel strangely unambitious.

Grammy-nominated house DJ and producer Todd Terry lands at the Fox & Firkin for a properly late session, with Patrick Steele and Maria Hanlon also on the bill.

Creekside Discovery Centre is throwing open its doors for a free day of river dipping, nature investigations, sensory activities, crafts and habitat tours. There’s plenty for little ones as well as older kids and adults, plus the unveiling of the new Love Over Gold mural at noon, followed by an artist Q&A and documentary teaser.

Full details including what to bring can be found here! General Entry is free, though booking a spot helps with planning. The optional Meet the Tide experience for ages 12+ costs £10.

Sydenham Library’s artist in residence Anna Arianova leads this free workshop inspired by Alexander Calder’s mobiles. You’ll cut, fold, bend and balance paper into your own three-dimensional sculpture, with all materials provided. It’s best suited to ages 9+ and advance booking is essential.

Entry is completely free and materials are provided, though booking through here is required to ensure there are enough materials.

If your Saturday requires heavier guitars, MANTRA are bringing their Btribute set to New Cross Inn, with hits from all the different eras of Bring Me The Horizon!

Big Fish Little Fish takes over the Fox & Firkin garden with World DJing Champion Mr Switch, bubbles, balloons, crafts, a baby chill-out cabin and an optional “Animal Fantastical” fancy-dress theme. It’s aimed mainly at families with children aged 8 and under, although all ages are welcome.

Tickets and details of what activities are available may be found here! Adults need to attend with a child, every member of the group needs a ticket, and pre-walking babies are free but still need one. The event is outdoors and partly covered, so this is one occasion where rave gear may sensibly include a waterproof.

Lady Banton — pioneering selector and founder of Seduction City Sound — headlines this month’s Deptford Dub Club, joined by Vandorta, Dirt Bike Dub, Drop Da Biscuit and mic man Doc Murdoc. Expect reggae, roots, rocksteady, dubplates and a Sunday night that has absolutely no interest in Monday morning.

Tom Houghton brings a work-in-progress show to Brockley Brewery alongside Victoria Howden, Johnny CT, Anno Gomes, Rosie Yadid, a special guest and MC Sion James.

📸 Lewisham Youth Photography Competition - Running through Sunday 20 September. Lewisham residents aged 24 and under can photograph participating South Lewisham Open House sites, with entries due by 27 September.

🏛️ Open House Festival at the Albany - Saturday, 10am–3pm. Wander through the Albany’s building and garden, learn a bit about its history and architecture, and do the whole thing for free with no booking required.

💌 E-Tegami – Japanese Picture Postcard - Saturday, 10:30am–12:30pm at Downham Library. A free all-ages workshop combining drawing and a few well-chosen words into a postcard-sized visual poem. Booking required; materials included.

🎨 A.P.T Open Studios 2026 - Saturday and Sunday, 1pm–6pm. Forty-two Deptford artists working across more than 20 disciplines open their studios for a nose around the work, spaces and creative process. Entry is free.

🐸 The Frog Princess - Saturday and Sunday at 2pm and 3:30pm. A 45-minute family musical in Sydenham mixing fairy-tale chaos, Bollywood-style music and dance, puppetry and comedy. Standard tickets are £10 adults and £5 children aged 3+, with under-3s free.

🥟 Chinese Dumpling-Making Class - Sunday, 1pm–2:15pm at Zhulin Hidden Village. Learn to fill, fold and cook your own dumplings for £12, then eat some and take roughly six home. The second-floor venue has no lift or step-free access.
